Eco-Friendly and Organic Baby Products

April 1, 2008

There are many products that have organic and eco-friendly properties - these are said to be better for babies. To give your little one the best start in life, here are a few tips:

The nursery: When painting the nursery, do it well before baby is born so that you reduce the chance of baby inhaling the toxic VOCs from paints and varnishes. If you’re pregnant, try to use water-based low VOC paints where possible. This is so that you do not inhale the toxins, which can be passed onto your unborn baby.

Organic mattresses and bedding: These are made with organic cotton and many are filled with natural fibres that reduce allergens and provide good comfort. They are made without using synthetic pesticides or fertilizers and may reduce skin allergies and respiratory problems in babies.

Nappies (Diapers): Biodegradable disposable nappies are very good for the busy, eco-conscious parent. They are better for baby’s skin mainly because they are free from harsh chemicals like bactericides and pesticides, which have been known to cause rashes and allergic reactions. Eco biodegradable nappies contain unbleached fibres and natural absorbent materials such as Maize starch, making the nappy biodegradable and kinder to the environment.

Skin care products: Babies have delicate, sensitive skins and they require mild products made from pure ingredients. Many organic baby products offer moisturisers, shampoos and bath washes without nasty foaming agents or harmful additives. All of which are ideal for baby’s sensitive skin.

Organic and Biodegradable Femine Products

Natracare Feminine Hygiene Products Sanitary waste counts for more than a third of total worldwide consumption - All eventually needing to be disposed of somewhere! Every year, in Britain alone, we would need to dig a hole 300 feet wide and 300 feet deep to bury the used sanitary pads and tampons that women throw away.

Since 1985, the trend has been towards thinner sanitary pads using less wood-based pulp and increased use of synthetic super absorbents made from petroleum. Apertured plastic film is mostly used as a cover on sanitary pads and liners today, and is often called the ” Dri-weave top sheet”. It is simply polyethylene film - or plastic with holes in.

Unfortunately, this synthetic material is being used more and more in other products such as baby wipes, wet wipes, feminine wipes, tumble dryer cloths, nappies, incontinence pads and moist toilet tissues. No doubt, all ending their ” useful lives ” flushed down the toilet or in a landfill site.

These products are loaded with potentially harmful chemicals, such as: Chlorine, Dioxins, Pesticides, Preservatives, Formaldehyde, Parabens and more…

Not forgetting the growing cases of TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome), which has been proven a symptom as a result of exposure to these chemicals.

There are different types of chlorine bleaches used today in the paper and feminine hygiene industry. The only true chlorine-free bleach is Hydrogen peroxide, which is referred to as Totally Chlorine-Free or TCF.

The alternative feminine hygiene products for women are slowly emerging, which now give them a choice on how to protect themselves while protecting the environment.

Spirit of Nature supply a range of organic biodegradable feminine hygiene products by Natracare, made from unbleached organic cotton. Free from chemical additives, chlorine and dioxin. A great deal kinder to you and the environment than conventional protection. They offer Natracare organic tampons, sanitary towels and more.
